You need surgery to remove your breast implants. Anesthesia is administered before the plastic surgeon makes an incision along the lower fold of your breast or around your areola; your plastic surgeon typically uses the same incision site as original breast augmentation surgery.

Your surgeon then removes your implant and closes your incision with sutures, tape, or other skin adhesives. They may place gauze and a surgical garment over your chest to help minimize any swelling after your surgery.

Your health insurance policy may cover post-surgical accessories, such as a compression vest and drainage pouches. Check your coverage with your insurance provider.

You will not be in any pain during the procedure since you’ll be under general anesthesia. During your recovery, you may experience some discomfort due to swelling and inflammation as your tissue and incisions heal.

Your doctor may temporarily place small thin tubes under your skin to help drain blood and other fluid that accumulates. The tubes may cause slight discomfort. Your doctor will prescribe medication to reduce your pain.

Eventually, the implant wears out because they’re only made to last 10-15 years. Your implant may develop leaks as it ages or even rupture. If your saline implant leaks or ruptures, your breast will deflate quickly, and your body will absorb the saline.

Silicone implants leak more slowly, and because your body does not absorb the gel, it accumulates in the surrounding tissues. Leaks can cause the scar tissue around your implant to harden, causing more discomfort in the area.

Full recovery from implant removal surgery takes several weeks. You’ll experience some swelling and pain in your chest area immediately following surgery. You may feel more discomfort in your arms or upper body for several weeks after your surgery. Your doctor will instruct you on how to care for your incision sites to prevent infection and help you heal faster.

After your implants are removed, your breast will return to the shape it was before. Your breasts may droop more and have slight irregularities in shape from scar tissue inside your breast. Larger implants may distort the shape of your breast more and leave your skin saggy once they are removed.

After your implant removal, you may want a breast lift if your breasts are extremely saggy or your nipples droop extremely low. Breast lift surgery raises and reshapes your breast tissue, eliminates sagging skin, and relocates your nipples, giving your breasts a perkier look. You can combine a breast lift with your removal surgery to have both procedures done at once.

This procedure is most commonly performed at either a surgery center or an outpatient hospital.

Surgery centers, also known as ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), are independent, licensed medical facilities that are governed by distinct regulatory requirements compared with a hospital. Procedures performed at an ASCs are often less expensive than when they are performed at an outpatient hospital, but they typically offer fewer complimentary services, and may not have the full-range of support services that a hospital provides.

Outpatient facilities are outpatient departments or clinics that may be within or next to a hospital, but is owned and run by the affiliated hospital. These facilities can perform surgical treatments and procedures that do not require an overnight stay. Procedures performed at an outpatient hospital are often more expensive than when they are performed in an ambulatory surgery center, but outpatient hospitals may offer more complimentary and support services for patients because they are connected to the hospital system.
