An eye exam under anesthesia or EUA is a method of performing an extensive eye examination performed while the patient is asleep. General anesthesia is given to keep the patient asleep during the exam.
EUA is classified as surgery because of the need for anesthesia. However, no cuts or incisions are made. Lights and tools to evaluate the eyes are used to look at the inside of the eyes and take photographs.
EUA may be recommended for patients who have difficulty tolerating an eye examination, including patients who may have trouble understanding or holding still during an eye exam. EUA is often used in children needing an extensive eye examination or individuals with altered mental status.
During EUA, a thorough eye exam is completed. Intraocular eye pressures are measured (pressure inside the eye), examination of the eye to determine any need for glasses, examination of the outer and inner eye, and photographs of the eye are taken during EUA. Bright lights are used along with standard instruments for examining the eye. The examination will take about 10 to 45 minutes to perform.

- Retinoblastoma
- Vision problems
After an eye exam under anesthesia, the patient will be monitored in the recovery room while they wake up. Usually, the patient will be released to return home the same day. Most patients do not experience any pain but may have some nausea related to anesthesia. Some disorientation or confusion is normal while the patient wakes up from anesthesia.
Vision may be slightly blurry from eye drops used to dilate the eyes, but vision is normal after an EUA. Any blurry vision will resolve within a few hours.
The doctor performing the EUA will come and talk to waiting family members immediately after the procedure. They will share the results and information obtained during the examination.
