What is the most common complication after permanent pacemaker placement?

The most common complication after pacemaker placement is bleeding. This bleeding most occurs most often around the site where the pulse generator is placed in the left chest. There may be bruising around the area, bruising that moves down the chest, or a collection of blood that forms where the surgery was performed, known as a hematoma.

This bleeding typically stops on its own. In some cases a minor repeat surgery may be needed to drain the blood if a large amount of it collects in one area.
