What does a blocked salivary gland feel like?

There can be a great variety in the presentation of blocked salivary glands or abscesses. Most patients complain of moderate or severe pain and swelling along with mouth dryness. Some complain of a foul taste or gritty sensation in their saliva, indicating both infection and possible salivary stones. The salivary gland swelling can be unilateral or bilateral. Your doctor needs to obtain a thorough history, including whether you have experienced fever, chills, skin changes, other adjacent swellings in your neck, sores in your mouth or throat, oral discharge, dental pain, and a detailed accounting of any recent treatment to the area such as radiation therapy and immunization history, particularly for mumps.
