How accurate is a mammogram?

Screening mammograms are about 80-98% effective in detecting breast cancer in normal breast tissue. When breast tissue is dense, the accuracy may drop to as low as 50%. In women with dense breast tissue, a 3D mammogram is more accurate than a traditional 2D mammogram. Your healthcare provider may also recommend an ultrasound or MRI to screen your breasts further.
